Do you suffer from a persistent internal monologue, a low-grade hum of anxiety, or a tendency to be mentally rehearsing the future while physically present? According to Eckhart Tolle’s framework in The Power of Now, these aren’t just quirks of personality; they are symptoms of a widespread condition. This guide reframes Tolle’s spiritual teachings as a diagnostic manual for the restless modern mind, offering a clear pathology for our suffering and a practical prescription for finding a state of profound well-being.
At the root of our mental dis-ease, Tolle argues, is an addiction to psychological time. We are chronically absent from our own lives because our consciousness is almost entirely consumed by thoughts of the past and future. The past provides us with an identity (our story, our grievances), while the future holds the promise of salvation or fulfillment (when I get X, I will be happy). This ‘time sickness’ creates a constant state of resistance to the only thing that is ever real: the present moment. It is this fundamental misalignment with reality that gives rise to all other painful symptoms.
The core pathology of time sickness manifests in several distinct, often overlapping, symptoms. Recognizing them in ourselves is the first step toward treatment.
Taking the next step becomes straightforward when you have the right support — Become an Ultimate Master of your life is worth exploring.

Taking the next step becomes straightforward when you have the right support — Heal your past, design your future is worth exploring.
A primary symptom is the existence of a compulsive narrator in our head—a voice that never stops judging, speculating, complaining, and labeling. Tolle identifies this as the ego. It’s not a ‘self’ but a dysfunctional thought process that we mistake for who we are. For example, after a slightly awkward social interaction, this narrator might spend hours replaying the scene, crafting better responses, and generating feelings of regret or embarrassment. The ego thrives in the realm of ‘what if’ and ‘if only,’ feeding on the psychological time it creates. It fears the present moment because in the simple reality of the Now, its dramas cannot survive.
Another critical symptom is what Tolle terms the ‘pain-body.’ This can be understood as a semi-dormant field of accumulated emotional pain from our past. Most of the time, it lies dormant. However, when triggered—by a stray comment, a specific situation, or even a thought—it activates in an acute flare-up. A person in the grip of their pain-body might experience a disproportionate emotional reaction, such as a minor inconvenience spiraling into a day-long episode of anger and despair. The pain-body seeks to perpetuate itself by creating and feeding on more negative emotion, effectively hijacking the host’s mind and behavior to generate the drama it craves.
Tolle’s work is not just a diagnosis but a practical treatment plan. The prescription is not a pill or a complex therapy, but a radical shift in attention. The cure is to withdraw energy from the past and future and anchor it firmly in the present.

While the principles are simple, the treatment requires consistent application. Critics sometimes worry that this approach can lead to passivity or ‘spiritual bypassing’—avoiding genuine problems under a guise of acceptance. This is a misunderstanding of the prescription. The goal is not to become a doormat to life’s circumstances, but to ensure that any action taken comes from a place of present-moment clarity and power, rather than from egoic reactivity or past conditioning. The prognosis for those who practice is a progressive dissolution of anxiety and suffering, and the discovery of a deep, abiding peace that is not dependent on external conditions.
